Tracks to Remember -- Smith Buck 2008

A quote from “The Greatest Hunting Stories Ever Told “ sums up my opening week, Ohio bow hunt with
Sunfish Valley Whitetails. " You'll soon forget the ones you drag out but the ones that outfox you will leave
tracks in your mind forever."
When I read this quote just 2 months ago I never imagined how true this could be and how it would affect me.
The whitetails that live around Latham, Ohio are some of the biggest in the world and I had a close
encounter with 12 pt buck that would have possibly scored 215 inches. This deer made his appearance
Thursday, Oct 2, 2008 around 7 pm and got within 20 yards, but never gave me an open shot. While trying to
get a shot at him, I was about to come to full draw, when another buck came down the trail behind my stand
and all I could do was look over my right shoulder and watch a 160 inch 10 pt walk by at 8 yards. At this point
I turned back around to see the 12 pt heading for a small opening that would allow me to get a clear shot.
Just 5 more yards and I would have had an opportunity to arrow one of the largest typical whitetails in the
world. But as fate would have it, the buck angled away and disappeared into the creek bottom. The next
evening I was back in the same stand and arrowed the 155" buck shown on the web site. This was my 2nd
largest buck ever and to do it with a bow was an awesome experience that I will never forget.
I can’t say enough about Sunfish Valley Whitetails. They offer some of the best whitetail hunting in the world
and their hospitality and professionalism is beyond comparison. The buck I was able to harvest is incredible
but the memories of the one that "outfoxed" me, will last forever.
